Announcing El Mundo Inalcanzable de Susana San Juan, a new Luxury Edition Book from Luna Press

August 31, 2023

A signed and numbered edition of 7, the book is entirely handcrafted and features 47 original photogravures.

This book would not have been possible without an exceptional team! Thank you to Jacqueline Miro & Madelyn Owens for designing, to Jennifer Shaw & Meg Turner for photogravure printing, to Sarah Smith of Stock Pile for binding, and to John Fitzgerald for letterpress printing.

“El Mundo Inalcanzable de Susana San Juan is a series of photographs based on the Mexican novel Pedro Páramo, a tragic myth of Mexico, by Juan Rulfo. The setting is a town in ruins; the characters, souls wandering in it, doing penance, telling their stories.

These photographs are my attempt to depict this world as seen through the eyes of its tragic heroine. It is my homage in images to Mexico, to Juan Rulfo and to Susana San Juans everywhere who will not be possessed.” — Josephine Sacabo

Through the four recent series that form the core of the exhibition (Those Who Dance, Disquiet, Cuentos, and Le Diable au Corps), Sacabo conjures a world of mystery and mysticism in her work, excavating stories about lives lived in secret struggle or without inhibition, reviving traditional processes of photography like photogravure and tintypes, and giving much-needed voice to women of the past whose legacies still inspire and haunt the artist to this day.  – H. Josephine Featured in Where Y’At Magazine

September 24, 2020

Josephine recently discussed her newest series, THOSE WHO DANCE, as well as her life, her love of poetry, and her path to discovering photography, with Where Y’At Magazine. Many thanks to the author Abbey Hebert for this wonderful feature!

“Sacabo finds the consolidation of her artistic ideas in literature. She explained that once an idea presents itself to her, she usually reads a line or a phrase from a book that pinpoints exactly what she was trying to get across. Once she finds this, the project has officially started. One of Sacabo’s interests is how the mediums of art communicate with one another, and this is a perfect example of that connection between poetry—her first love—and photography, her true love.”
