The title of this series is by Simone Weil, the great French philosopher who inspired this work and to whom it is dedicated.
The images are about three very painful years of my life – years of hurricanes, floods, plagues, devastating illness, isolation, and grief.
All I could do at this point was work, and images began pouring out of me, sad, tragic, painful – everywhere I saw rage doing its terrible damage – in politics, war, art, relationships, the evening news. Everywhere.
Rage destroying all that is humane – love, kindness, compassion – gone. It is a very powerful force, gravity, that pulls one down.
Where was grace? Once I asked myself that question, I looked around and saw it everywhere – the swaying oak trees in the park, the sunset on my balcony, my cat sleeping in a ray of sun, my grandchildren’s smiles, my friends making me laugh. On and on.
I decided then that I would focus this series as a journey from gravity to grace available to us all.
